Formed in April 2006, Hatch is the brainchild of Hatch president Christopher Schneider and Erik Tungate, Hamtramck’s former Director of Community & Economic Development. They saw a need for an artist community that would promote Hamtramck in a positive way. Artists could pool their resources to challenge each other and reach out to the greater community. In March of 2006, we "Hatched!" with our first juried exhibition.

In the time since then, Hatch has kept a full calendar with continuous group, solo and juried exhibitions at Cafe 1923, artist critiques, drawing events by the Dr. Sketchy division, numerous festival participation, monthly community education workshops, Jamdown in Hamtown concerts, as well as this online presence.

We currently have over 50 members and over 300 mailing list subscribers. (and growing!) Our members are architects, professional & emerging artists, cartoonists, photographers, painters, students, teachers, art enthusiasts and sculptors.

Member credentials include the Design Director for Metro Times, the Founder and Director of the Summer Program at Cranbrook, as well as educators who have or currently teach at Oakland Community

College, Washtenaw Community College, Oakland University, Lawrence Tech, Wayne State University and the Oxford School District.

Approximately 50% of our members are Hamtramck residents, 48% are from the surrounding Metro-Detroit area, and 2% are from across the border in Canada.

We are now working on acquiring the former Hamtramck Police Station to convert into exhibition and studio space, further expanding our objective.

We meet at 5 p.m. Sundays (bi-weekly) at Cafe 1923 on Holbrook in Hamtramck. Check the Hatch Calendar for exact dates.
