Salt water carries much metaphysical and sociopolitical weight. It affects nearly every culture on Earth, and has been put to use in vital ways throughout history. The Art Babes consider ways in which humanity has historically interacted with it, interacts with it currently, and how we imagine we will interact with it in the future. Art Babes is an intersectional feminist art collective based in Detroit, Michigan. For over two years, Art Babes has been dedicated to fostering supportive spaces for femme creatives to engage in their practice, share resources and ideas, and promote their artistic expression.

Summer of Renovation!

Hamtramck Disneyland, 12087 Klinger, Hamtramck 48212

All summer we will be having volunteer work days to get Hamtramck Disneyland back to its prime. We will be meeting every other Sunday, starting Sunday, June 24th, through Sunday, September 1st, noon to 4. Everyone is welcome!

Here is a rough overview of some of the things we have on deck to do (some of our scheduled tasks are subject to change): 

June 24: Paint exterior of both garages. Finish painting the shuttle. Repair the windmill. People with speciality knowledge or carpentry skills who have advice and thoughts on how to proceed rebuilding, repairing and re-bracing the upper structures will be very much appreciated!! Some of the work will involve ladder climbing!! 

July 8: Paint cut outs, whirly-gigs, and other toys. Build platforms on alley side to add these things and paint it. Hang work in the “gallery” (the space between garages).

July 22: Paint more cut outs and such. Affix finished cut outs, et al, onto the platforms and gallery. Begin repair of upper structure (specialty crew).

August 5: Continue repair/rebuilding of upper structures. Build and paint additional platforms. Repair the thing on wheels and affix stuff to it. Paint more cut outs and such.

August 19: Continue repair of upper structures. Add cut outs, et al, to new platforms. Fix and add items to the front porches and middle walkway.

September 2: Add more work to gallery. Get the thing on wheels done up for the Labor Day Parade.

With a career spanning nearly three decades, the painter/sculpture is a well-respected member of Detroit’s art community. The winner of the Plowshares Theatre Company Sankofa Arts Award, Calloway’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions such as the Charles H. Wright Museum and the DIA.

He will be showing a wide selection of his found-object portraits brimming with personality. He finds his materials from the streets of Detroit where he was born and raised.

Is it still common for young girls to have diaries? Growing up in the 90’s/early 00’s scribbling down your hormone fueled rage was commonplace. Diaries were being marketed to us as this magical technology where you could whisper your secret password and only you could access it. You could decorate it with Lisa Frank stickers, hide it under your pillow, shut your bedroom door and spend hours anxiously over thinking whether “Brad” just likes you or LIKES likes you. You poured your heart and soul into this journal of angsty thoughts until your parents read it and sent you to therapy against your will. Privacy is one of the most important things to have ownership over as a young person growing up in a place where nothing you have is actually yours: you probably didn’t buy any of it yourself and it could definitely be taken away as punishment. You were sent to your room for behaving badly, but that wasn’t always a bad thing since it was one of the only places you could escape from the rest of the world to hide.

Your bedroom was a sanctuary picked out from a catalogue and personalized if you were lucky enough to have parents that approve of your style. If not you lived vicariously through friends and babysitters much cooler than you. There was the neighbor down the street with a collection of JNCO jeans gathering dust on his temperature controlled waterbed, the girl with a Prada backpack filled with every color of Hard Candy nail polish, “Little Miss Perfect” with the turquoise Macintosh desktop and the confidence to talk to strangers in chat rooms through AOL instant messenger over the dial-up connection. They were all so trendy and had the possessions to match. But not us. Our bedrooms had rules. Our parents made sure that they had order. They had wallpaper, figurines, nice furniture- a wooden desk we would inevitably stab and carve into out of anger instead of our skin so our boyfriends would stop asking us why we were wearing long sleeves in the summer. We turned our closets, the only space our parents didn’t touch, into small altars made up of our favorite objects and plastered the walls with pictures of clothes and boys we would never have. We’d gather junk that we stole from Walmart to be rebellious and religiously arrange it in an obsessive compulsive manner so that everything was aligned perfectly. In between the ugly clothes our mothers made us wear and our secret stash of Hot Topic fishnets we would hide makeup we barely knew how to use. We would get dressed up, listen to Linkin Park on our Walkman and take selfies at terrible angles to put on our Myspace page and copy/paste emo lyrics as the caption. We would read depressing poetry on Livejournal and we would ALWAYS delete our browser history.

You spend so much time in your bedroom isolated with your thoughts. It was an incubator which intensified the demons that carried on into your adult life. A space to accumulate a bunch of shit you don’t need but HAVE to have. To be cooler than the other girl. To feel better than the loser you know you are. To replace your sadness with stuff.

In the days after the previous election, "Girl, U Okay?" was the question Akers and Hayworth were asked dozens of times. Since then, they have dealt with dread and anxiety, turning to obsessive mark making as a response. Akers, from Brooklyn, and Hayworth, from the Detroit are, recently graduated from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

In the words of the artist herself:
"I've always been fascinated by the human figure. Faces alone have so many interesting stories to tell. As I've worked more and more abstractly, I continue to cross lines between figurative and abstract work. In February, 2015, I started drawing with ink wash on raw canvas during live drawing sessions. I then take them home and play with various images as I tear up the originals and create something a little beyond the drawing.

In 2016 I started playing with silver gesso and transferring ink images onto it. I then lay more images on until I feel the piece is done."

"Hang Loose is a surfing term meaning relax and just go with it because you can't ride the wave if you're uptight. After college, I spent three months in Portugal working at a hostel and I learned how to surf. I gained a beautiful new insight into mother nature and my own humanity. The ocean taught me a lot about how to live and how to learn. Although the massive ocean is more powerful than we can comprehend, we can ride the wave. If it's good then ride it, if it's choppy then swim under it. If it pushes you over then paddle back out. This same idea applies to life and this theme is consistent every where in nature. Life is incredibly fragile and we are vulnerable to nature's delicate balance. Yet we and all of life - like plants - still flourish. Worries and getting hung up on what "should of happened" is useless, futile and counter-productive to what nature is teaching to those with willing ears. If something is true and right, then it will happen and nothing will be able to stop it. Have a little faith, relax, let go of the negative thinking, stick your neck out and go with whatever happens."

Seven Houses of the Holy is a collection of work spun out of Carl's graphic novel illustrations. 

"I started noting conversations I was having with women artists locally. Some of them are friends, some are professional associates. All are something far beyond talented. I was intrigued by their view of themselves. There is an unassuming grace about them. Their artistic brilliance grants us something I see as a gift to all humankind. Something sacred. These large poster pieces depict the complexities of mind, spirit, and body I have observed glowing from them."

2017 Kresge Artist Fellow Jeanne Bieri's first solo exhibition at Hatch features lush and large scale fiber works never shown before.

"I was in an antiwar show three years ago and to prepare I did considerable research on war in general, In particular about WWII. My Dad was a pilot and brought back Army Blankets, those scratchy things that we took to the beach, Y Camp, and used in the barn. They never wore out and were the last things any of us kids chose when we went camping on family vacations. During my anti-war research, I began mending and piecing these blankets, an act of making them whole. A blanket is the border between wakefulness and sleep, a border between warmth and cold, sometimes between surviving and death.
I have also collected quilts and studied their patterns and stitching. The hand stitched quilts, even the raggedy pieces were too good, too personal to discard. Like the Army blankets, quilts are loaded with stories. I began to piece and combine the Army Blankets with the quilts.
All work is hand sewn, an act I cherish because each stitch is a meditation. The chain stitching is practiced on the surface of Muslim clerical garments, each stitch a prayer. With the world in such turmoil it is my profound hope that in restructuring and mending these blankets, by defining the surface with the chain stitch, the horrors of war that exist today can be kept at bay. It is my practice of healing and peace."

Einfuhlung is a body of self portraits in which the artist, Elise Martin, manipulates her own likeness, in an attempt to find common ground with the proverbial Other. It has been said that the creation of art both encourages and is dependent upon empathetic thinking. In this collection of works, the artist maps, charts and dissects her own image in a sincere effort to create better understanding and human connection.
