Social media and technological advances are rapidly changing the way photography is used and perceived. People working in the medium have found themselves working to adapt or fighting to keep what they love about photography alive.

Hands On at Hatch Art: The Camera Beyond the Basics

It is best to master the equipment you have rather than trying to improve as a photographer by buying more stuff. This workshop will help you master your camera, understanding just what it is capable of doing in your hands. Learn the purpose of those curious buttons, confusing menu items, and strange symbols that riddle your camera. Pick up pointers on camera tricks and difficult shooting situations.

We will start with the assumption that you know how to use your camera's exposure settings but want to know more to unlock its full potential.

Christopher Schneider has been teaching photography in high school and college for over 20 years. He has shown his artwork worldwide and has done commercial work for clients such as Wired Magazine and Cranbrook Art Museum.

Come join this hands on, friendly, social workshop and bring your camera!

Join us at Hatch Art for a workshop where we'll make monotype prints with Alice V. Schneider.

No experience necessary! Working with ink may tend to get messy so be sure and wear "messy" clothes or bring an apron! It’s an easy and fun way to make prints, each one as different as the next! You may be able to make a few monotypes, depending on your pace. We will have a few different colors of ink to choose from and some paper available, please feel free to bring some of your own! I will provide cotton balls and q-tips for removing the ink, but some people have had fun results by using other materials... different materials provide different subtractive mark-making.

The workshop is open to adults, and children over the age of 10 and they must be accompanied by a supervising adult. The workshop will be easy enough for beginners, but more experienced artists will be able to make more elaborate monotypes from the basic materials.

Materials will be provided, however, we strongly suggest you bring some ideas and materials of your own… Please reach out to Alice beforehand if you have any questions!

It’s an easy and fun craft, and we will have needles, foam, wires and pipe cleaners for armatures, and lots and lots of wool. You can see and try flat techniques for making pins or small decorative items, and/or making fiber creatures. There will also be samples and books on hand for inspiration.

The workshop is open to adults, and children over the age of 10 and they must be accompanied by a supervising adult, due to the "needle" part in needle felting. The workshop will be easy enough for beginners, but more experienced artists will be able to make more elaborate felted art from the basic materials.

Your camera is not a magical device. It is a machine that operates in predictable ways. Make it bend to your will by learning how to control it. We will cover the basics of exposure, but we will also look at features often neglected.

Bring your own camera, or just come and watch. Any camera will work, but mostly we will be discussing DSLR operation.

Every two weeks, Hands On at Hatch Art is hosting a series of photography workshops, lectures, critiques, and socials. Open to anyone with an interest, each session will focus on a particular subject ranging from Photoshop to film, DSLRs to camera phones, art to family snaps, broad theory to quality print.

The host is Christopher Schneider, an artist, professor, business owner, and longtime President of Hatch Art. A graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, he has taught photography for nearly 20 years, with artwork showing as far away as China.

Most sessions will be two hours with social time to follow. Special dates will involve critiques, guest artists, and “walk abouts.”

TOTAL TRASH IS PRETTY SELF EXPLANATORY WHEN YOU SEE IT.TOTAL TRASH IS GOOD FOR A LAUGH.IT’S BURNOUT-SIDER.IT’S FROM ANOTHER TIME.TOTAL TRASH IS STONED OUT AND FUCKED UP.TOTAL TRASH IS ROCK AND OR ROLL.IT’S NOT FASHIONABLY FASHIONABLE.IT’S A FARCE.TOTAL TRASH IS TOTAL TRASH.

BIO:
Thelonius W Bone was raised by Van Halen in a secluded patch of woodlands , deserted by the US Army, just outside of Brighton MI. A true loner, T-Bone has created a world of art inhabited by real freaks, army guys, cowboys, rats, drugs, and dicks. He refuses to use any stick other than an exclusive custom Bic Firth heavy grade. They make them for him in the basement of Hard Cock Cafe, by the caseload.
Anyways…

The very real miracle of this outsider's work is that he has found a way to create a true sense of abandon and recklessness in his work, all while we are living in a world where there is no longer such a thing as culture or counter-culture. Against all odds, he has fucked 'the man'. It must be a matter of spirit. He continues to give many of us hope, while all we see around us is hopelessness. J. Kallio 2015

Hands On at Hatch Art: Ground Charcoal Drawing

Hatch Admin

Tuesday, January 5th from 6pm – 9pm
Hatch Art Gallery, 3456 Evaline St. Hamtramck, MI 48212

Join us at Hatch Art for a Hands On at Hatch Art workshop, where we will be making ground charcoal drawings on paper. Charcoal is used in art for drawing, making rough sketches in painting and is one of the possible media for making a parsemage. It must usually be preserved by the application of a fixative. Powdered charcoal is often used to "tone" or cover large sections of a drawing surface. Drawing over the toned areas darkens it further, but the artist can also lighten (or completely erase) within the toned area to create lighter tones.

We will provide paper, charcoal supplies, erasers, easels and guidance for each person that registers! We only can fit 15 so register early!

The workshop is open to adults only (may be nudity), please no children... 18 and over. The workshop will be easy enough for beginners, but more experienced artists will be able to make more elaborate drawings from the basic materials. We strongly suggest you bring some ideas and materials of your own… Please reach out to Alice beforehand if you have any questions!

This 3 hour workshop will be $30.00.

Rosemarie Hughes: New Artworks

Hatch Admin

December 6 - 30

Cafe 1923 Coffeehouse
2287 Holbrook St, Hamtramck, Michigan 48212

Reception Saturday, December 12, 3-6pm

"Though I started my art career as a photographer, over the years I've realized that I'm most fulfilled working as a mixed media/assemblage artist. By combining a variety of materials and textures, I experience a creative satisfaction that I have yet to find in any one medium alone.
Found objects are what I use to create my assemblage pieces. Most of the items are repurposed and have a history I know nothing about. Who did the object belong to and what did it mean to its owner? Was it an every day, common item or something for special occasions? By creating art with these objects I am able to tell a visual story about a situation from every day life that may have become obsolete, a relic of times past. In telling my story I hope to inspire the viewers of my art to find their own story and experience of nostalgia."

Rosemarie Hughes' art will be on display at Cafe 1923 in Hamtramck through the end of December.

Tile on my face, pale pink and cool under the bare fluorescent light of the upstairs bathroom, feels right. I know a guy who’s tough but sweet. Bass and thin laughter seep into this room like an echo trapped in a dirty mug. He’s so fine. Another five minutes before someone knocks. Time is losing steam, spreading out and thickening, my watermark veiled reflection becoming more saturated in the mirror. He can’t be beat. Flick the light off. Wrap a corner of the hot pink vinyl shower curtain around my waist and move in it. He’s got everything that I desire. Rotate a hip slow, seductive, sinister in this emptied out, satellite space that floats like a dark cloud above the party. Sets the summer sun on fire. Lock pupils with my own eyes. I want candy. Go a little deep and loose.
Face falls apart. Be still and silent, let the edges blur. I want candy. Vocals slither under the door. Got to see him when the sun goes down. Who is that. Ain’t no finer boy in town. You’re my guy, just what the doctor ordered. My body is me and everyone here. So sweet, you make my mouth water. Filthy bathtub, stained soft rug crumpled up in the corner. I want candy.
The window lets sharp cool air into this dense, sweaty bubble. Candy on the beach. There’s nothing better. But I like candy when it’s wrapped in a sweater. Someday soon I’ll make you mine. Then I’ll have candy all the time. I want candy. I want candy. I want candy. I want candy. I want candy.

There is a certain comfort in repetition. Repetition is like an addiction to the known. Repetition is a story that has no ending. Repetition contrasts itself against itself. Repetition represents an order within chaos. Repetition is a search for sublime perfection through routine. There is a certain comfort in repetition.

Sean Bieri: Having Words

September 27-November 2
afe 1923, 2287 Holbrook. Hamtramck, MI 48212

"Having Words" is a series of small text-based paintings by Sean Bieri, drawing inspiration from various sources: Amateur signage, inspirational jpegs, artists such as Jenny Holzer, Yoko Ono, and Bruce Nauman, zines, gag cartoons, quilting, and a longtime Scrabble habit, among other things. Half-remembered dreams, half-baked ideas, disembodied punchlines, fragmented poetry, miscellaneous brainfarts, and other forms of word play all figure into the equation.

"I am most interested in big abstract questions of romance, loss, and longing, especially the feelings that we secretly harbor for one another. My work explores this through personal and collective memories, actual and constructed experiences, and the tangling and untangling of the very loose threads that connect us — the real and the unreal. I often employ found objects and appropriated imagery and text, which are preloaded with history and meaning, as a form of cultural shorthand toward my personal visual vocabulary. This is both an attempt to communicate with others and to fill in the blanks of memory and persona. The inclusion of religious and popular iconography in my work takes into account these parallel forms of worship while aiming at a larger sense of function and design in our daily lives. Through the construction of self-portraits, personal landmarks, and mash notes to the American Dream, I am self- mythologizing, exploring objects and actions that might seem remarkably unremarkable on their own. I see this as a form of transubstantiation, in that through my intervention with these common objects, I might bring something to light that was secreted there all along."
-S. Northrup
