"The subject of my new paintings are buildings from the areas of my roots in Detroit. My great-grandmother's neighborhood and my grandparents' neighborhood are areas I travel through regularly. Although my forefathers have gone, many of the buildings still exist. And as I travel through this route, I see some of what they saw. Also, there is a kind of American humor of marketing in these businesses and places, which creates a fantasy and promises an ironic and grandiose dream alongside its apparent decay. Accompanied by an odor and a memory, these images represent the writings on the wall, so to speak, that continue to build the past into my current experience."
