For the last century, photography has held a tenuous place in the art world. It may seem like an old and long-ago settled argument to say that photography is art, but in practice it is kept at arm’s length. Despite photography’s artistic titans, its presence in every art school, and its vast popularity, the close ties it has to commercialism and populism keep it in the periphery.
Socially, photography’s popularity is at an all-time high. It is estimated that 1.72 trillion images were taken in 2022, an average of 20 pictures per person per day. This ubiquitous presence in modern life explains, perhaps, why it is difficult to accept photography as a full and equal member in the halls of fine art. Unlimited reproducibility and, by extension, lower prices negatively impact the medium’s reputation as well. Most recently, artificial intelligence sullies photography’s reputation even further, as loud, eye catching images flood the market that already shows the average American around 10,000 pictures per day. The artist who uses photography is seemingly left with a weakened voice few are willing to hear.
'The Singular Image' is intended to give time, space, and voice to the fine art of photography. It is a chance to slow down the image stream and look at pictures one by one, without illuminated screens, and made with the same passion and deliberation as every other form of artist.
